Children from neighboring communities flocked to try out the new toys in the new “Ludoteca” at the community library last month. Children participated in dance contests and other activities prior to trying out the toys at the celebration festivities.

Elida with library users

Thanks to the donations of Spanish foundations Tercera Edad para El Tercer Mundo and Fundamar, a large delivery of educational toys and books has arrived at the Mountain School. The program, called “Ludoteca” provides materials to Guatemalan organizations in rural and impoverished areas.

The truckload of toys included puzzles, games, dolls, riding toys, playhouses, foos ball – you name it. It is like a dream come true for most of these children. They are having the opportunity to play with toys they’ve only seen on TV, things they had no hope of owning.

The toys are being integrated into library reading programs and other activities and have become a new incentive.

silence in the library!

Over 500 fiction and nonfiction books in Spanish for all ages were also received a few weeks earlier, and volunteers are assisting with cataloguing and preparing them to add to the library’s collection.

everyone welcome

It is likely the library will receive future donations from these foundations.
